This might have been a sudden shock to those of us who were familiar with Mac Miller and his work and ultimately crushing for his ride or die fans. Mac miller did indeed come up from the Pittsburgh scene and into celebrity status. He evolved from party raps into more subdued archetypes and dark themes. Along the way, he made his way to being a very recognizable and charming artist. TMZ reported on Friday 9/7 that Miller was found dead around noon at his home in the San Fernando Valley. The 911 call was made by a friend who was at Miller’s home.
The cause of his death was an apparent and later revealed overdose; the rapper had been struggling with substance abuse and depression for years, partly due to his celebrity and recent failed relationship with singer, Ariana Grande. In May, Miller hit his Mercedes G-wagon into a utility pole and fled the scene. Soon after confessed to LAPD and was charged with a DUI. This was somewhat of a wake up call for him as he was slated to begin touring to promote his latest album, Swimming.
On his last interview with Vulture , Miller says, “I really wouldn’t just want happiness… And I don’t want just sadness either. I don’t want to be depressed. I want to be able to have good days and bad day… I cant imagine not waking up up sometimes and being like, ‘ I don’t feel like doing shit.’ And then having days where you wake up and feel on top of the world.”
Mac Miller’s Swimming is a funk infused project quietly released last month and offers collaborations with Dam Funk and Thundercat. The album hit a strong #3 on Billboard 200 just behind Drake’s Scorpion and Travis Scott’s Astroworld.
